Springfield

Springfield is Southern Living Magazines Comeback Neighborhood - Our Springfield attraction has a special sense of community, where neighbors know their neighbors, not just on their block, but the ones who live all over the district.  Combine that friendliness with easy commutes, walkable and bike able streets to restaurants, bars and shops, historic shady parks, and beautiful period homes dating back to the late 1800's, and you have yourself a truly spectacular, transitional, sustainable community.

While established in 1869, the development of Springfield accelerated soon after a great fire destroyed most of Downtown Jacksonville in 1901.  As Springfield is separated from Jacksonville by Hogan's Creek, only one structure, Hammett's Mill was the  victim of the great fire.  As more and more people migrated to this tranquil setting near Jacksonville, more and more history evolved.   Springfield was home to some of  Jacksonville's film industries first actors and the Klutho home and film studio.  Oliver Hardy (silent movie star of team Laurel and Hardy) moved here from Georgia to further his career.  It was the place where Truman Capote spent summers with his grandmother, and Ottis Toole, (famed serial killer and arsonist) joined Henry Lee Lucas and called home while he committed some very disturbing crimes.  Ottis Toole is said to be the famed killer of young Adam Walsh, the boy for which the show Americas Most Wanted was started by his father, John Walsh.
